The children’s book community was taken aback yesterday by the news that Amazon had purchased Marshall Cavendish Children’s Books. People wondered if this meant the end of MC print and what the whole purchase meant for publishing in general. Of course, anything can happen, but Amazon has been publishing adult books for quite a while now, and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle at Booklist report that many of these titles, from several imprints, including AmazonEncore and Thomas & Mercer, have been outstanding. I contacted Margery Cuyler, publisher at Marshall Cavendish, and she’s excited about the distribution and digital formats that Amazon can offer. She adds that Amazon is committed to selling the MC backlist as well as new books. And, happily, she’s going to remain at Cavendish.
