From the Department of: You Wish

I received a press release for a book (David Michael Slater’s The Book of Nonsense: Sacred Books, Vol. 1) headlined, “Publisher Expects New Series to Be Banned.” Have we come to the point where publishers and authors want their books to be challenged, in the belief that the resulting attention, positive and negative, will increase sales? (After all, they can’t burn your book unless they buy a copy!)

Actually, I think we passed that point a long time ago.

Hi there! We realize this kind of thing might seem cynical, but the unavoidable fact, given the day and age, is that by book 3, this series will draw ire. There is simply no way around it, given the Da Vinci Code’ish territory the story eventually (ingeniously) enters. The thought was to stay ahead of that curve, to manage the inevitable choppy waters that lie ahead. This is in part due to the fact that many producers have seen the first three books and rumors are afloat about where things head. If all this draws extra attention to this book, great — we’re quite certain that most folks who read this groundbreaking series will be very glad they did.
